Bricks & Pavers - Australia's low maintenance building materials. Inspiring home designs & information.
Urban environments are more richly layered than others and brick today has a significant contribution to make to the “urban story”. Design in the urban context is more heavily influenced and informed by its surrounds and past. City environments also demand a more structured and rigid aesthetic, which makes brick the ideal choice for these areas.
Formerly a brickworks, this site is a great example of “design by first principles” at work. The new built form is influenced by what was there before, affording the residents of this development context and perspective. Large medium density developments need texture and warmth in material to add a human character.
Where the developer is responsible for the buildings for some time after construction, low maintenance cost is vital and face brick is the best product to blend with the environmental context. It won’t deteriorate due to staining and peeling coatings, is less susceptible to graffiti and the medium colours reduce reflective glare and make the development seem cooler than white rendered walls. Acoustics and fire performance are also critical in urban developments and face brick performs very well in both areas.
